Local Waste disposal

All boroughs have their own waste collection services and the Services offered can vary from place to place. This page is mainly based on the case study of Hounslow.

Case Study:  Hounslow waste collection

SITA UK is responsible fot waste collection services in Hounslow. It includes a variety of collection services for Rubbish and Recycling. Different items are collected separately for easier disposal. Residents in hpunslow now recycle over 34% of their household waste, this is a colossal increase compared to the 19% statistic in 1997.  The decrease in waste going to landfill stops the release of methane and also reduces the carbon footprint.

Collection Services:

  • Greenbox- A green box is provided to residents to collect current materials such as foil, glass bottles, jars and even small electrical items. This is offered on a weekly basis.

  • Plastic- Plastic is collected weekly in a white sack.

  • Paper- paper waste is collected weekly in a blue bag

  • Garden Waste- Garden waste is collected weekly; residents are provided  with a reusable green sack for Garden waste.

  • Residual Waste- residual waste is collected in a black bag pruchased by the resident.

  • Bulky household waste- Bulky household waste such as sofas and soil is required to be arranged for disposal by the owner.

Once waste is collected it is taken to various locations:

  • Paper- Paper waste is sent to Ayelsford in Kent

  • Cardboard- is sent to Newport paper - Shropshire

  • Glass bottles and jars- are sent to Recresco in Southampton

  • Food tins and Drink Cans- they are sent to Novelis in Huddersfiels

  • Steel- Transported to Coventry metals

  • Plastic- Mixed plastics are sent to SCA Recycling in Southampton

  • Food waste- is sent to BiogenGreenFinch in Northampton to be decomposed.

  • Garden waste  and household Rubbish- is taken to Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire

This shows the waste hierarchy, this shows that most people tend to dispose waste rather than preventing, reducing or recycling.
